The Air India baggage allowance for domestic flights will depend on the Cabin Class you are travelling in:

Premium economy
  • Comfort Plus – 30 kg/66 lb
  • Flex – 35 kg/77 lb
Business

Baggage allowance prerequisites

The following are some points to remember about the domestic flights baggage allowance for Air India:

  • the above-mentioned allowances apply only to Air India operated flights and not to Air India Express or codeshare flights.
  • for passengers travelling on Air India domestic sector and connecting to Air India international sector or vice versa on the same ticket, the allowance for the international sector will apply.
  • Star Alliance Gold members are permitted an additional 20 kg/44 lb of baggage in the economy class.
  • members of premium clubs and our Flying Returns programme will get additional baggage.
  • infants are entitled to one collapsible stroller/carrycot/infant car seat.
  • the maximum weight permissible for a single piece of baggage is 32 kg/71 lb. Please note that this rule is applicable to the entire Air India network.
  • passengers can carry assistive devices free of charge as additional baggage subject to the limitation of the aircraft as per the DGCA guidelines.

Baggage dimension rules

The following are some of the rules for the domestic flight baggage dimension for Air India:

First or Business class

The total combined dimensions (length + breadth + height) of each piece should not exceed 157 cm/62 inches.

Economy

The total combined dimensions (length + breadth + height) of both pieces should not exceed 272 cm/107 inches, and that of each piece should not exceed 157 cm/62 inches.

Baggage piece and weight concept

First or Business

The maximum sum or dimensions in Air India domestic flights for First or Business class is 157cm/62 inches, and the maximum weight allowed per piece is 32 kg/71 lb.

Economy

The maximum sum or dimensions in Air India domestic flights for an Economy class is 271 cm/107 in (both pieces combined), and the maximum weight allowed per piece is 23 kg/51 lb.

For flights to and from India and Nairobi:

Please also note that:

  • infants in all classes are allowed one baggage of up to 10 kg/22 lb.
  • the sum of length, breadth, and height of each piece must not exceed 158 cm/62 in.
  • if customers are carrying more than one piece, the total sum of length, breadth, and height of all the pieces combined must not exceed 273 cm/107 in.
  • a piece of baggage that weighs more than 32 kg/71 lb will not be allowed on the flight. This rule is applicable across the Air India network.

Baggage dimension rules

First and Business class

The sum of the length, breadth, and height of each piece for First and Business class must not exceed 62 inches or 158 cm. The weight of each piece must not exceed 32 kg or 70 lbs.

Economy class

The total combined dimensions (length + breadth + height) of both pieces in Economy class should not exceed 107 inches or 273 cm. The weight of each piece must not exceed 23 kg or 50 lbs.

Additional baggage allowance for Flying Returns members

Air India and Star Alliance airlines offer members of Flying Returns with some additional baggage allowance on flights operated by them.

Prerequisites

The following are some of the prerequisites for Flying Returns members to avail of the additional baggage allowance:

  • additional baggage allowance is not available on partner or codeshare flights, including flights marketed by Air India and operated by a partner airline or partner-marketed flights operated by Air India.
  • Silver Edge Club members are eligible for additional baggage allowance on flights operated by Air India only, whereas Golden Edge Club (GEC) and The Maharaja Club (TMC) Members (corresponding to Star Gold) are eligible for additional baggage allowance on Star Alliance operated flights as well.
  • lithium battery-powered self-balancing devices are banned and cannot be carried in passenger baggage. Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is banned and cannot be carried in checked or hand baggage. Power banks cannot be carried in checked baggage but can be carried in hand baggage.
  • power banks should be packed in carry-on bags alone.
