Android 14: 5 Latest Features You Probably Didn’t Know About

On October 4, 2023, not only did two flagship Android phones make their debut, but an updated Android operating system, Android 14, was also released. As anticipated, the first phones to receive the latest OS update are the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel Pro. If you haven’t read about them yet, we highly encourage you to check out the blog Made by Google: Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro & Pixel Watch 2 Launched. So, what is so special about the latest OS update?

Android 14 was officially launched at the Made By Google event on October 4. This means that in the coming weeks and months, more users will start enjoying its new features. While some changes are behind-the-scenes and won’t be noticeable to regular users, others, such as customizable lock screens, improved privacy options, and enhanced accessibility features, will have a positive impact on users.

Android 14 Enhances Fitness Data Management and Privacy

Android 14 introduces Google’s Health Connect, a new feature that simplifies the management of fitness data by unifying information from various apps while ensuring its accessibility and security.

Privacy is a top priority in Android 14, with updated data sharing settings that notify users when an app shares location data with third parties. Users can now selectively share specific images and videos from their gallery with apps instead of granting blanket access. During phone setup or PIN creation, Android 14 encourages the use of a 6-digit PIN for added security. This enables automatic unlocking upon entering the last digit of the PIN, eliminating the need to press an enter button.

Exciting Camera and Audio Upgrades in Android 14

Android 14 introduces impressive photography enhancements with “Ultra HDR” support, offering richer color and contrast through larger 10-bit image formats. The update also improves Camera Extensions, simplifying third-party app integration for enhanced photography experiences. Users can now enjoy automatic framing for video calls, ensuring a centered appearance.

In terms of audio, Android 14 introduces Lossless USB audio capability when connecting headphones to the phone’s USB-C port, allowing for high-quality sound playback directly from the device, provided you have the appropriate audio files. These upgrades enhance both the camera and audio experiences on your Android device.

Exciting Android 14 Features for Personalizing Your Phone

Android 14 introduces a range of customizable options for your Android phone. The new lock screen customization system allows you to choose from various templates, change the clock appearance, adjust your color palette (including a monochrome option), select your notification style, and pick two lock screen shortcuts. Google also incorporates AI intelligence to control widget visibility.

You can now personalize your wallpaper by choosing from Google’s presets, using your own photos, creating a custom emoji wallpaper, or selecting generative AI wallpapers (exclusive to Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro). Additionally, Predictive Back animations assist in app navigation by showing the screen you’ll land on when using swipe gestures, simplifying the user experience.

Google has made reading on Android 14 more convenient with an improved Magnifier app that offers pinch-to-zoom controls. This app is highly customizable, allowing users to choose the magnification area, screen display size, and the option to maintain magnification across apps.

Additionally, a Quick Settings tile has been added for adjusting font size. The font size option uses nonlinear scaling to smoothly adjust text size, ensuring pages maintain their proportions as you resize text. You can now scale text up to 200%, surpassing the previous 130% limit.

For users with hearing impairments, Android 14 introduces flash notifications that can light up the display or rear camera flash when new alerts occur. Furthermore, the update streamlines the setup and adjustment of hearing aids with dedicated menus and shortcuts, making it easier to configure when needed.

Hidden Easter Egg Game in Android 14 Settings

Continuing a Google tradition, Android 14 includes a fun Easter egg for adventurous users within the Settings app. By performing specific taps and holds in the About phone menu, you can access a space exploration game, fitting the theme of Android 14’s promotional art. Enjoy some hidden fun while exploring your phone’s settings!

All in all, the Android 14 appears to be a positive update for compatible devices. Some features, like flash notifications and enhanced lock screen customization, bring Android closer to its rival, Apple’s iOS 17. Other changes, such as improved accessibility options, better third-party camera integration, lossless audio via USB, and enhanced privacy controls, cater to users with specific needs.

While Android 14 may not represent the biggest leap, it’s a step forward for the open-source and highly customizable Android OS.
