The Town of East Gwillimbury and the Township of West Lincoln are the latest municipalities to allow Sunday hunting in Ontario.
The new opportunities came into effect as of Sept. 1, 2023 after the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry amended Ontario Regulation 663/98 under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. The change means that 189 municipalities south of the French and Mattawa Rivers now permit Sunday gun hunting.
These two additional Sunday hunting opportunities are the first since July 2021.
Up until 2005, Sunday hunting was not allowed in Ontario south of the French and Mattawa Rivers. Strong advocacy by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) helped change that however, and each year, OFAH staff attends numerous municipal committees and council meetings to encourage by-law changes that would allow Sunday gun hunting.
